Finally got round to watching this, it was a really great story but in the same way as Ressurection of the Daleks, there is too much death. Of course, you need a certain amount in a sci-fi action show, but when 95% of the characters die, it's a bit silly IMO. Even the Doctor dies in this one!

Guess you won't like Attack of the Cybermen then. :winkDT:

By far the best Davison story I've seen as it's the only one where he seems to have any real spark to his character instead of being deadly dull, he's almost channeling Tom with the flippant remarks during some of the exchanges with Sharaz Jek which is awesome.

JNT was a complete idiot for not letting Robert Holmes write any of Davison's earlier stories because more than anybody else he knew how to write scripts that got the best out of each lead actor.

There is a lot of death in the story but I'd sooner have that than nobody of major importance ever dieing outright or leaving the show and being dragged back a series or so later in the hope of quick ratings boost like we get nowadays.

I hate to disagree with so many people that read DWM and voted in the mighty 200 poll but I don't think that this is the best story ever. True, it is one of the best Peter Davison stories but, as people have said before it has too much death in it and in places it gets a bit dull. But that's just my opinion... I would give 'Caves' an 8/10

Although this is said to be the best story of all time - I am a little bit anxious as to where they got that idea from (i know a poll) but it is not the best I have seen! Maybe other people think different, but it didn't really impress me and I didn't like Sharaz Jek.
Erm... new signature.
(hope it isn't too big).

I've done my bit to help Karen Gillan. Voted for her in the GLAMOUR Awards. Good Luck Kaz!

An odd story. I think 4 episodes is the best for format for the classic Who stories, I.e. A Two parter for today.

While I love the helpless-ness of it, I don't see how it can be no.1 story ever. That would probably go to Talons for me. And the Magna beast was terrible.
Oh dear, I've lost my signature again.

Bought this today as part of Revisitations, £15 NEW! I was well chuffed to put it simply. Will definately be watching this later, but I've seen it once before - rented it ages ago and remember it being brilliant.

I rented this when I saw it was the voted the beat episode in DWM and I enjoyed a lot. It must've been around my 3rd classic story.

I rewatched this today and enjoyed it very much, it was better than I remembered and certainly deserves its place as one of the best stories.

It's weird how, with a brilliant story like this, you forget its issues - the shelled dragony thing in the caves is a bit rubbishy, but that always seems to get overlooked by reviewers etc (probably because of the quality of everything else) but stories like Warriors of the Deep get totally slated for bad monsters.

Never, in all my days, did I think I would find a Doctor Who episode, in which there is a Phantom of the Opera inspired character! (masked disfigured face, obsessional love for the woman in it)

I think this was one of the better Davison stories by far! and the throwaway lines were brilliant! "It's not glass....and I'm not a pain" (whether that was an intended pun or play on words, it was clever)

Morgus was such a brutal character and I'm glad he got killed like he did because he deserved it.the only crap in this episode is the monster in the cave, I mean what the hell was that?!

Final Rating: 9/11

This and Talons would be perfect if not for their random Stock Monsters in my opinion.
