Again, a very strange figure for them to have made! When you look back at series 1, we could have Jackie, Pete - even Margaret the Slitheen or Nancy, and they would be bigger characters than Dr Constantine. He was only in it for a short while, but to be fair did have a brilliant scene with the transformation into a gasmask creature.
Overall then, is this figure one that will simply blend into your collection, or is it a great standalone character?
To start off with, the head. This was the first ‘interchangeable headed’ figure released and I was interested to see how it worked. Unfortunately the collar of his shirt does stop the head from neatly fitting in with a little ‘pop’ sound, and even then it doesn’t turn around much, but the detail on it is fantastic, and this is still preferable to just having a gasmask head on his body.
The clothes look really smart and detailed too, but it’s a little disappointing that the coat is stuck to the waistcoat, meaning that he always has a little more static, statue-like quality to him when viewed close-up.
So if there are all of these bad points to the figure, why have I rated it so highly? Well, to be frank, it’s just so good! Yes, the coat is attached to the waistcoat and that means it is more static in some ways, and probably lowers the play value of it because he’s not so nice to feel, but his posability is enhanced by it in some ways because it does make him look more real from a distance.
The detail in him is also a marvel, from the ruffled bottom of his trouser legs, to the carefully drawn scar on his hand - something missing from the Empty Child figure! His bicep articulation also serves to enhance him, and without it I can’t help but think that the figure would score a lot lower. Yes, when you turn the biceps they look out of place, but just by turning them very slightly it makes the character look so much better.
So overall this is a good figure, let down by one or two little problems.
