First Impression Review:
Short review
Wave 1 of the Torchwood action figures, produced by Scificollector, blew away all doubts about whether or not the company could handle the figures. This time they not only match their previous record, they rip it apart and really stand up against Character Options. With some of the best figures we have ever seen from any range these are essential purchases not just for Torchwood and Doctor Who fans but for any action figure and toy collectors.
Full review
Well I think it is more than fair to say that Scificollector have not only produced a fantastic range of Torchwood action figures with Wave 2, but that in many ways the Torchwood action figures are perhaps better than an awful lot of Doctor Who ones. These really aren’t just toys (though I can imagine some will enjoy playing with them!), these truly are collectable figures.
The process of creating these figures is difficult enough for a large company like Character Options, so for a small company there are an awful lot of ups and downs. One of the biggest worries is ‘will the detail be there?’ In Wave 1 I think it’s fair to say that Jack suffered from lack of detail in places, a great shame as it held him back from being one of the best figures so far. This time it’s very different. Remember how exciting it was that Mr Sin came with something that would actually fit in the holster? Captain John has three. Remember how smart The Editor looked in his suit? Ianto does it better. The list goes on.
There’s not a single ‘dud’ in the selection, every action figure is excellently detailed. Every single one will look fantastic on display because they all have something very striking about them.
In my review of the Torchwood action figures Wave 1 I wrote about how Scificollector had injected them with a lot of heart. And, once again, I can happily repeat that claim. Not only are these highly detailed figures but they also have that hidden ‘X-Factor’ that pushes them to the next level. Not only are their faces lifelike and excellent sculpts (especially Captain John’s uncanny sculpt) but they do have that ‘life’ within them. They’re not static, they certainly look more like a human than they do an Auton if you follow me!
Once again the plinths to stand the action figures on are incredibly useful, allowing some excellent poses on a shelf (may I recommend Ianto running?) and, once again, it really sets them apart as collectable action figures rather than simple toys. The packaging has been revamped for Wave 2, perhaps not so individual any more but still an excellent design that looks very good on display but is not difficult to open either. It’s slightly odd to see Tosh on ‘Children of Earth’ packaging, but I love the way holes aren’t just printed on the side of the cardboard insert, they’re actually cut like that. Just another nice little feature that adds to the overall presentation.
These action figures will appeal not only to fans of Torchwood, Doctor Who or Sarah Jan, but to any action figure collector. They are so visually unusual and striking that they will look excellent on any shelf. With their Children of Earth packaging they almost scream out “we are here”, and don’t we know it! Phenomenal work from Scificollector, I’m sure all collectors appreciate how lucky we are with these. Can’t wait for Wave 3!
