New visitor to this site? Welcome! I’m so pleased you’ve decided to visit!
This site has been running for over a year now but I still got comments that it was a bit confusing when you first arrived. That’s why I’ve now created this page to guide you through the site carefully. Firstly there’s information on the figures themselves, then information on the site.
The Figures
At the beginning of 2005 the company Character Options began releasing 5” Doctor Who Action Figures. They were an instant success and took off, selling in their millions. There are now about 100 of the figures and the range is continuing well.
The target audience is 8-10 year old boys, but Character Options recognises the fact that many older people also collect them, as well as girls.
People began collecting them madly and soon a whole collector’s community built up. People started taking clever pictures of their figures and customising them to make different characters etc.
In 2007 BBC aired their spin-off show ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’ and Character Options released figures to tie in with this. They were also very popular.
Character Options have also now got the rights to the Classic Series of Doctor Who too so we will hopefully see lots of figures from the shows history in the future.
One other range of figures exists, the Torchwood range, but the rights have been bought by scificollector.co.uk instead and these are aimed much more at collectors.
The figures look set to continue into the future if they keep selling well, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.
The Site
To start with think of the site split into three sections – the forum, the miscellaneous figure related pages and the figure capsules and information areas.
To start – the forum. This is our lively and fun discussion board where we discuss and debate all things Doctor Who, mainly focuses on the figures. You have to register to post but once that simple procedure is completed you’ll be welcomed into our great community!
Second is the Miscellaneous Figure Pages. These include images, customised figures, games, and more. They’re fun to explore and I welcome any contribution to them from users.
Finally there are the figure capsules and information. The Upcoming Figures page is updated every week and has information on rumoured figures, confirmed figures, and figures in the shops already.
For the New Series figures I have two checklists. One lists every variation and release, for easy reference, and the other just lists each figure once. On the second list you can then click the figure’s name and this will take you to the figure capsule. To help in organisation I have now designated each individual figure its own capsule page.
To an extent it is difficult to decide exactly which figures should have their own pages (if K9 clean and K9 rusty do should the Cyber Controllers with their different eyes etc.?), but generally I designate an individual page if it represents a different character (e.g. the red and grey Krillitane, and also with their open mouths) or if it represents a character at a different point in time (e.g. The End of the World Cassandra, Rusty Cassandra and Destroyed Cassandra).
Accessories, with the exception of the ‘Wire’ ones which are arguably figures in their own right, will be talked about under the figures they came with.
If you find any faults with which characters have been given a capsule please contact me at
Status This tells you whether a figure is available yet or not. (Remember though, only confirmed figures have a capsule page)
Pictures Pictures of the figures in all their glory. Some pages do not have the pictures yet, but I hope to take them over the coming weeks (and the quality will then be greatly increased as I have my hands on a more powerful camera now!)
Full review
In each review I talk about the pros and cons of the figure. For a basic overview you can take a look at the table at the top of each review. Here is how the table works:
Name
Name of the figure
Posability
X/10 - How well you can pose
the figure, how many different positions there are, etc.
Sitting
X/10 - How good the figures
are at sitting on a shelf (with their legs hanging over)
Likeness to character
X/10 - How much they
represent their characters on television
Overall
.
X/10 - An overall score of
how good these figures are - NOTE: This is not an average of the past
scores, although they might give me an idea of what score to give here
We have also recently started the ‘Figure of the Month’ scheme. On the first day of each Month we will give one figure the ‘Figure of the Month’ award and by visiting its figure capsule you’ll find a brand new animation, comic, information, and more! We will then accept any content from users to add to the page throughout the Month. At the end of the Month the information will remain on the capsule.
…And that’s about it! Hopefully I’ve given you a good introduction to the site and from here on it’s up to you to explore and enjoy. However if you think I’ve missed anything off this article please do let me know and I’ll add it.
