As with other Autons
So here I am, writing my first Doctor Who figure review! As I’m working down the large list of figures alphabetically, the first to go under my critique are the Autons!
Upon first look, these aren’t really anything special. The fact that they are shop window dummies means that they don’t really have anything too recognisable to them, their clothes are pretty boring, their hand seems to be very badly joined to the arm, and they have pretty rigid posability.
However, if you hadn’t guessed, I’m being sarcastic! To a Doctor Who fan, these are brilliant!
They fully capture that ‘plasticy’ stiffness which the Auton’s have in abundance and no matter how you pose them, they look like Autons! Any problems that other figures have by not looking real enough are just swept away with these, as that is the real beauty of them! When you push them off a table, they fall like Autons should, they move their head like Autons, even their waist moves like an Auton!
As you have probably guessed, I love these figures! They come packaged with the two Autons who appear to be in charge of looking after the Nestene Consciousness in the episode ‘Rose’, one having purple spots down his front to distinguish him! This allows for a lot of customised figures. There is also the new grey one.
The one thing that does slightly let these figures down is their hand. Although I was actually happily surprised to see that we did indeed get the famous Auton hand, with a small adjustment it could have been even better! The joint for movement is located at the top, and the hand swing in an ark. This means that instead of having it hanging down, it sticks up! If the joint had been located at the bottom of the hand, it would have provided a much more realistic feel. The hands are also very fragile, and one of my Auton’s hands has fallen off! I haven’t heard of anyone else’s doing this, so I don’t know if it is localised to mine - but it is a worrying fact.
Therefore, a great figure, but could have been so easily even better, possibly the best figure yet, if a few things were changed!
