The third deluxe figure released was the Reaper, but was this one step too far? In most respects, no it wasn’t a step too far.

The Reaper was always going to be a difficult figure to make, as in the episodes they were quite mysterious, we never quite got to see all of them. For example, the whole concept of the mouth was never explored much - mainly because it would be too horrific - so recreating it in figure form would always be different to having it in the episodes.

The tail, to start off with, is brilliant. In preparation for this review I re-watched ‘Fathers Day’, and it’s amazing just how much the articulation of the tail helps to make it move just as it does in the episodes! The wings are also a very nice representation, with some stunning sculpting and paintwork helping to make them more realistic. I find the joints holding the wings to the body are a bit weak, even after only a little bit of movement, so the wings will flop down if you’re not careful. Not a huge problem, but a bit of a niggle.

The head is also truly stunning, with superb sculpting and paintwork really making it seem sinister and frightening - especially the eyes that look really alive! The ‘arms’ at the front are also great, however I don’t know if it’s a large design fault but my top two arms seem to be incorrect. I only realised after a bit, so can’t take it back, but the right hand one is the same as the left hand one, and because of the way the teeth are positioned this is incorrect. As I say, I don’t know how big a problem this is with the batch, but I’ve got it anyway.

The light-up feature is ok, but not essential and not amazing. I can’t see evidence of them lighting up like that in the show and it looks a bit out of place really. Just an idea they bunged in to make it more interesting I would think, but it doesn’t add that much in reality. The mouth at the front is also a bit of a let down. It’s so very fake, mainly because the paint has no shading and is very different to the colour around it. The plastic used for the body is semi-transparent and well coloured, the mouth is just normal plastic with no shading so is a bad contrast. As a result this does slightly let it down.

However, as you can see from the scores, this isn’t something to dwell on for too long and I would highly recommend this figure to everyone.
